CHARLESTON, SC, USA – January 18, 2013 – Sawgrass Technologies, Inc., and Seiko Epson Corporation of Japan today announced that they have entered into a long term license agreement under which Epson, as an authorized Sawgrass licensee, will sell inks for sublimation imaging.
Sawgrass is an industry leading developer of innovative printing technologies as well as the world largest supplier of dye sublimation inks. Seiko Epson Corporation is a global imaging and innovation leader for a broad range of electronics products. Epson printers as well as their patented piezo electric print heads are used in the dye sublimation market.
Seiko Epson has extensively evaluated the Sawgrass global patent portfolio and signed a license agreement which allows them to legally enter the dye sublimation ink business with printers having a carriage width greater than 42 inches.
LA Photo Party will demonstrate Photo Party Upload, its iPad-based wireless photo printing solution for professional event photographers, using Mitsubishi Electric’s CP-D707DW dual-deck photo printer. The compact, lightweight CP-D70DW and dual-deck CP-D707DW photo printers for event and photo booth applications will be featured, along with the CP-9550DW and CP-3800DW for professional needs.

I use canvas in my home in this manner and when people visit they are so inquisitive of this type of imaging. Even on the cable TV designer makeover shows, I am amazed that frames and basic photo prints are used by designers and NOT CANVAS. Portrait photographers know otherwise, and are constantly taking prints to show awards with photo illustrative canvas. Finishing can be enhanced with spray liquid laminates in gloss and satin – very similar to the process fine artists have always used. Canvas is organic and mimics the fine art world or oils which enhances value.

This product is new on the market and I have seen it used many times in interior photo décor and in the high end fine art markets. It is also gaining exposure in the portrait markets. It really gives a crystal-like tonality to softer hues, especially cool colors. It is not inexpensive material; therefore, it needs to be marketed as a premium product. Metallic Canvas is growing in awareness every week. Introduced at the recent IPI Supplying Partner Trade Show in Las Vegas, several IPI members and portrait labs are already working with this material.

For small volume production, consider the Ricoh GXe 3300n, with a print size of 8.5×14″, perfect for Chromalux panels (8×10″,
jewelry, pads, clothing items and acrylic portrait blocks. The large GX7000 has a 13×19″ size output, but two different size ink cartridges.
The Epson 7700 is a four color 24″ system that is popular in production houses doing larger volumes of photo gifting.
Mutoh RJ-900 can get you into bulk refill cartridges, and a larger aluminum panel market, but costs are also higher, so a strategic business plan needs to support this.

Kodak is pre-announcing the discontinuance of it’s three Professional EKTACHROME and ELITE Chrome (color slide/reversal) Films. Demand for and sales of these three products has been steadily declining over many years. The three EKTACHROME and ELITE Chrome films will continue to ship until all remaining inventory has been depleted. Kodak Ektachrome films of this generation were the hallmark of commercial photographers in the 90’s and introduced the higher saturation color look that was trendy in publications.
Effective immediately, prices for the impacted products are increasing by 15%. This does not affect Kodak Professional Color Negative or Black & White films, which remain a vital part of Kodak’s award-winning Professional Film portfolio. We say goodbye to an old friend for many photographers.
